How to Import and Use H5P Files in Moodle and Other LMSs

H5P files enable interactive content such as quizzes, videos, and presentations. Here's how to import and use H5P files in Moodle and other compatible LMS platforms.

Using H5P Files in Moodle​

Step 1: Enable H5P in Moodle (If Not Already Enabled)​

  1. Log in to Moodle as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to Site Administration > Plugins > Activity Modules > Manage Activities.
  3. Ensure Interactive Content (H5P) is enabled.

Step 2: Import the H5P File​

  1. Go to Your Course:

    • Navigate to the course where you want to upload the H5P file.

  2. Add an H5P Activity:

    • Click Add an activity or resource.
    • Select H5P Interactive Content.

  3. Upload Your H5P File:

    • Under Package file, click Add... and upload your H5P file.
    • Save and return to the course.

Step 3: Configure and Publish​

  1. Edit the activity’s settings as needed (e.g., title, description, grading).
  2. Save your changes and test the activity to ensure it works correctly.

Using H5P Files in Other LMS Platforms​

1. Blackboard​

  1. Log in to Blackboard and navigate to your course.
  2. Select Build Content > H5P.
  3. Upload your H5P file and configure the activity settings.
  4. Publish the content for students.

2. Canvas​

  1. Log in to Canvas and open your course.
  2. Go to Modules and click + to add new content.
  3. Select External Tool and choose H5P (ensure the H5P LTI tool is enabled).
  4. Upload your H5P file and configure the activity.

3. Brightspace (D2L)​

  1. Log in to Brightspace and go to your course.
  2. Navigate to Course Tools > Content.
  3. Add a new module or open an existing one.
  4. Click Upload/Create > H5P.
  5. Upload your H5P file and save it.

Tips for Using H5P Files Effectively​

  • Preview Your Content: Always test your H5P content to ensure it works as intended before sharing it with students.
  • Track Engagement: Use H5P analytics (available in some LMS platforms) to monitor student interaction and performance.
  • Update Regularly: Keep your H5P content updated to maintain compatibility and relevance.
